Pioneer Elite CLD-99 Laserdisc Player

I have had a laserdisc player for a very long time, I was definitely an early adapter. In the early years my wife and I really appreciated the quality as well as the bonus features that laserdiscs offered. We were able to listen to commentaries many many years before the advent of DVD’s. I have had several players over the years and I picked up my CLD-99 new back in 1992.

The ClD-99 doesn’t see nearly as much use as it use to but it still does get used. I have a huge collection of Laserdiscs (I bought a ton from rental shops when DVD’s pushed them out of the stores) and I have many LDs that are still not available on DVD. DTS laserdiscs also are some of the best sounding discs you will ever hear, they are audio nirvana.

The Elite CLD-99 is easily the best Laserdisc player I have ever owned. The picture quality is quite amazing for a laserdisc player while it isn’t as good as DVD it still puts out a very nice picture.

The Elite CLD-99 is loaded with all sorts of goodies. It has all the sound options like AC-3, twin D/A converters, CX noise reduction and with a signal to noise ration of 117DB it’s hard to beat. On the video side it has one of the best 3-D comb filter that Pioneer ever made, digital video processing and variable digital noise reduction. It also has many of the features one would expect in a high end Laserdisc player. It can play both sides of the disc, on-screen display, independent CD tray, etc. It’s a great player.

While we don’t use the laserdisc player as much as we used to, it’s still a vital part of our home theater and gets used at least a couple times a month. Great players can be found for a great price on ebay these days so if you are in the market for one I suggest you look there or in your local classifieds.
