When I was subwoofer shopping I was doing a lot of research on the net. I did a lot of reading on several of the popular home theater forums out there and I kept on reading rave reviews of SVS subwoofers, a company I had never heard of at the time. The more I read the more intrigued I became. I discussed it with my wife and when I told her that SVS offered a 100% satisfaction guarantee she told me to go ahead and give them a try.
I ordered a SVS CS-Ultra, you have the choice of ordering a single sub or a pair, I went with a single. I did get the amplifier with the sub as well and it’s a monster, 1,000 watts of pure bass power. The amplifier is a Samson S1000 and it has performed well for me over the years without ever giving me any troubles.
When the SVS CS-Ultra arrived at the house I was a bit surprised by the size of it. I of course knew the dimensions of it and everything before I ordered it and had seen lots of pictures but I was still a bit surprised by the size of it. I finally got the monster down to my basement, at 72 pounds it’s not the easiest thing to move around. I got everything hooked up to my system and gave it a test run.
WOW!! I was utterly amazed at the sound this subwoofer produces. I had read dozens if not hundreds of glowing reviews of this sub before I ordered it but I was still supremely impressed by it. I quickly ran through some of my favorite subwoofer scenes from my DVD collection. I played the depth charge scene from which has some astonishly low bass notes and I about had to pick my jaw up off the floor. It wasn’t long before my wife came downstairs to hear for herself and to tell me that I was rattling things throughout the house. After U571 I put in the Haunting and queued up the door pounding scene. WOW, WOW and WOW. My wife was laughing at me because of how giddy I was acting by the amount of bass that the subs were producing. We went through a few of the other movies in our collection picking out cool scenes and we were both very impressed with the SVS.
I knew shortly after the first few notes that I wasn’t going to be returning the SVS. It’s not the prettiest thing I have ever seen and it’s by no means small (It’s a full 39″ tall and 16″ wide) but what incredible sound it produces. The SVS CS-Ultra has got to be one of the best bang for the buck subwoofers available. For less than $1,500 I was able to get more bass than should be legal. I absolutely love showing the subwoofer off to people who have never experienced anything like it, the looks on their faces is just fantastic. My male friends seem much more impressed than my wifes friends though.
If you are in the market for a sub take a nice long look at SVS subs, they are an amazing value and to this day I still can’t believe how much subwoofer you get you for the money.
